About Alia College

Alia College is a small school offering a comprehensive mainstream curriculum. Students engage in steady systematic learning to build towards their best VCE results. Their achievements are secured by supportive teachers, abundant individual attention and encouragement of confidence.

The open communication style and structured academic environment develop critical thinking and enable students to be curious, innovative and audacious in their own learning. Students are encouraged to question basic assumptions, explore and assess hypothetical possibilities and synthesise as well as analyse elements of knowledge. Our focus on active critical thinking contrasts with the ‘skills-by-drills’ approach of many schools, which produces passivity rather than active, thoughtful and self-empowered students.

Socially, Alia is informal and relaxed. Students take responsibility for their own actions and disagreements and disputes are resolved by negotiated discussion. There is no formal rigid punishment system.

Alia students enjoy being at school and frequently remain engaged at school long after the official day has ended.

Visitors to Alia discover the unusual qualities which characterise one of Melbourne’s most authentic and successful educational environments.

Alia suits students who want to be able to contribute more and accept responsibility for their own education.
