Message from the Principal

Bring out her best is an essential ingredient in everything that Strathcona does, from fostering creativity and innovation, to strengthening self-esteem, resilience and levels of responsibility. We encourage our students to live life fully - to see them emerge as confident young adults with optimism and insight.

For 89 years, Strathcona has been providing its students with a rich and stimulating curriculum, supportive pastoral care, inspirational teachers and first-class facilities across its three campuses in Canterbury and Hawthorn.

I invite you to visit any Strathcona campus to experience the distinctive warmth in the atmosphere-a tangible sense of community. This is a place where girls can be totally comfortable-where they can feel happy and safe. It's the perfect environment in which young women can gain the confidence and self-belief they need to explore and contribute to their world.

- Helen Hughes (Principal).

About Strathcona

‘Bring out her best’ is Strathcona’s defining sentiment. Offering a rich educational experience across three campuses, Strathcona is a place where your daughter can fulfil her intellectual, creative and spiritual potential. The rich tapestry of school culture, stimulating curriculum, superb facilities and inspirational teachers are all there to ‘bring out her best’.

Strathcona is a medium-sized independent school, co-ed in the ELC and girls from Prep to Year 12. Since 1924, the school has provided a warm, safe and dynamic environment in which to prepare students for an ever-changing world.

Strathcona girls spend Year 9 at Tay Creggan, a magnificently renovated building in Hawthorn. Students attending the Main Campus (ELC and Years 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12) and Junior School experience state-of-the-art academic facilities and resources to nurture their personal growth. The Early Learning Centre provides sessional kindergarten and Pre-Prep programs that strive to instil a natural curiosity about the world. Strathcona provides specialised programs in Years 7, 8 and 9 at the Middle School, plus a comprehensive VCE program offering all the prerequisites for tertiary study. Pastoral care and co-curricular programs play an integral role at Strathcona, with the highly interconnected network of parents, students and teachers fostering close ties between home and school.

Academic

Strathcona is committed to small class sizes as a key driver of sustained academic excellence. The learning journey begins in the Junior School, where Prep to Grade 6 students experience cutting-edge facilities. Specialist programs establish fundamental learning skills and provide the foundations for further learning.

The transition to Year 7 is a significant step for any student, and Strathcona’s SEED (Seek, Engage, Enrich, Diversity) Program enhances the academic curriculum at this critical time. Focusing on real-life interdisciplinary topics, the program contributes greatly to the well-rounded Strathcona experience.

Year 9 is a time of burgeoning independence and the refinement of a strong personal identity. It’s at this critical time that girls at Strathcona move to the Hawthorn campus for the unique 12-month Tay Creggan experience, which is focused on independent, project-based enquiry.

On returning to the Senior School, the girls continue to develop as creative and critical thinkers. Strathcona is acutely aware of the importance of the final years of secondary school and is dedicated to supporting VCE students in achieving outstanding results.

Career planning

When it comes to future study and career directions, Strathcona provides students with a broad spectrum of options. The school has dedicated resources on hand to support students as they consider their choices, including the Careers Website, a dedicated Careers Room and individual advice from the Careers Advisor.

Leadership

Instilling a strong sense of leadership is vital in preparing students for life after school. It is a fundamental part of the Strathcona philosophy, and various Cross-age Programs at the school are all designed with this goal in mind. Throughout their journey, Strathcona students are given age-appropriate leadership opportunities among their peers and the wider community.

Co-curricular program

The school’s diverse co-curricular programs include sport, music, drama, debating, public speaking and much more, creating a rich experience for senior students. Global awareness is also encouraged through the school’s exchanges and tours, providing the opportunity to experience new cultures across the world.
